When the soldiers arrive, the old woman is waiting.

Although I couldn’t resist giving this story that title, it doesn’t have anything to do with Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea (a novel I never particularly liked). Instead this is a bit of mythology and history, wrapped up in a flash package. It came out from Daily Science Fiction in July 2021!
