The Varekai series is a set of novellas about an archon named Ree Varekai: a supernatural being summoned into the world to serve humans, who now wanders in search of her own past. The short story “The City of the Tree” takes place elsewhere in the same setting.
The sound of the horn pierces the apeiron, shattering the stillness of that realm. Its clarion call creates ripples, substance, something more. It is a summons, a command. There is will. There is need.
