The trouble is, a payoff that would be very satisfactory when delivered in this book or maybe the one after generally looks much weaker if you have to wait five books for it to show up. People who haven’t read the series multiple times, or read it all in one fairly quick go, are likely to have completely forgotten that plot was even there.
Excellence of your other arguments aside, I fail to understand why a better churn process has not been put in place.
Doesn’t everyone rotate their clothing stock? When laundry gets put away, it goes on the far right side of the drawer and everything else shifts over. New shirts for the day must always be chosen from the left side of the drawer (or at least the left quartile, to allow for some daily whims.) This is easily expanded to more than one drawer (my own t-shirt laden husband is fortunately holding steady at two somewhat tightly-filled drawers) with the equivalent of a carriage return: overflow from the left side of the bottom drawer gets moved upward to the right side of the top drawer. This is just basic stocking protocol and best practices, here.
