There’s always William Chester Minor’s madness. But Simon Winchester covered that territory pretty thoroughly.
It cracks me up that the OED was published in alphabetical order. I mean, I suppose that’s the logical way to do it if you want to publish it piecemeal, but I would have assumed (if I hadn’t read Simon Winchester’s The Meaning of Everything and The Professor and the Madman) that they’d assemble the entire thing and then publish it in one monstrous go.
