It annoys me when a movie promises me (speculative) genre elements and then fails to deliver them.

Wheras the constraint of the supernatural to the metaphorical or hallucinatory was one the movie’s few saving graces. I swear to god if a real angel had shown up, I’d have thrown something at the screen.
And this is coming from a man with an Angel fetish.

I can understand that, from the perspective of the game. But the trailers promised the supernatural, and then the film didn’t deliver. I mean, they kept showcasing lines like, “the Devil is building his army, and Max Payne is looking for something God wants to stay hidden” — which sounds good, and no doubt that’s why it was in the trailers, but in retrospect it’s an utterly meaningless bit of dialogue.
Which applies to a lot of the script in general.
