Kicking at the darkness until it bleeds light

The title of this month’s tikkun olam post comes from something Marissa Lingen once said years ago, about the symbolism of the darkest time of the year (and the making of difficult but lovely cookies in that season). Seems apropos.

As promised, I’m posting an open thread on the first day of each month where people can talk about the things they’re doing to repair the world. Any good deed you have done recently, any charitable donation or volunteering of your time, any change you’ve made in your life so that you will be a better citizen of your society, please share it here. Anything you are intending to do in the coming months, tell us about it.

Nothing is too small. Don’t hold back on mentioning something because you’re embarrassed to mention something so trivial. We need every bit of light.

I started tutoring a local kid who’s struggling with reading! And I have made a lot of calls to public servants.

Literacy is one of those things I’m committed to myself, because it’s such a vital skill for so many other kinds of activism.

I followed through on an action alert from the Friends Committee on National Legislation: I contacted the Dept. of Justice and the White House asking them to prevent catastrophe to the water protectors at Standing Rock by at least sending observers, investigating violations of rights, and promoting negotiations between the governor and the water protectors. The Friends Committee on National Legislation (see fcnl.org ) lobbies Congress and the administration to advance peace, justice, opportunity, and environmental stewardship. They are a voice of peace and sanity in Washington and you can get weekly action alerts to focus your world-healing efforts.

Thanks so much for the rec! That’s exactly the kind of thing I need right now.
