“Cutting the Cord”

Is this . . . science fiction?

Certainly not of any hard variety, no. But this is probably the most science fictional piece I’ve yet sold — it has to do with aliens and a space elevator and everything! It started life as a sonnet, but sonnets are an odd form to cram a plot into, so it wound up as a slightly longer set of rhymed quatrains with a closing couplet.
